About this scholarship
Established in 2015 by the Albert Coates Memorial Trust, the Scholarship is intended to assist second or third-year students undertaking Nursing or Nursing/Paramedicine studies with course-related costs, including the expense of undertaking regional placement.

Eligibility
This scholarship is open to applicants who meet all the following criteria:
- Citizenship: domestic
- Course: Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing/Paramedicine
- Campus: Ballarat
- Year level: second or third year of course (as of Semester 1 2025)
- Study load: full-time
- Engagement with the community
Application process
Applicants will be required to provide the following as part of the application:
- A written statement* of approximately 300 words outlining:
- how you engage with your (local) community and how this reflects the mission and values of ACU.
- (if relevant) details of your personal or family involvement with the Australian Armed Services
- Evidence of your community engagement relating to the activities outlined in your written statement. For example: a Letter of Recommendation from a community leader or a certificate.
*Statements are assessed on content, not language skills. If you access assistance from advisors, tutors or AI technology to complete your personal statement, please ensure that your submission accurately reflects your personal situation with regards to the criteria.
Selection criteria
Applications are assessed based on the strength of the following criteria:
- Community engagement
- Letter of Recommendation
- Academic merit (based on ACU results)
- Challenges or barriers
- Interview (if shortlisted)
Preference will be given to applicants with personal or family involvement with Australian Armed Services.
Selection process
Applicants will be shortlisted by the Scholarships Office. Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview with a selection committee consisting of two representatives from The Albert Coates Memorial Trust, the relevant Head of School (or nominee) and the Deputy Head of School (or nominee)
Other
- Recipients will be requested to submit an Impact Statement for the donor explaining how the scholarship has assisted them. The letter should be submitted to the Scholarships Office no later than 1 October in the year that the scholarship is awarded.
- Recipients will be invited to a presentation event and the Albert Coates Memorial Trust Oration (likely to be held in October). They are requested to attend these events if this does not impede placement or study commitments.
