About this scholarship

Established in 2007 by the George Alexander Foundation (GAF), founded by the late industrialist and philanthropist George Alexander AM, for the purpose of assisting outstanding students, especially those demonstrating exceptional leadership potential and community participation, particularly those from rural and regional communities, to achieve their undergraduate educational goals at the Ballarat Campus or any other campuses in NSW.

  • The scholarship is valued at $24,000, to be paid instalments of $4,000 per semester for students in a three-year course and $3,000 per semester for students in a four-year course.
  • There are ten scholarships available (five for students at the Ballarat campus; and five for students at any of NSW campuses)

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to applicants who meet all of the following criteria:

  • Commencing a new ACU course in Semester 1, 2024
  • Citizenship: domestic 
  • Course: any ACU undergraduate degree
  • Have not previously commenced a degree at undergraduate level or higher
  • Study load: full-time 
  • Campus: Ballarat, Blacktown, North Sydney or Strathfield
  • Minimum ATAR: attained a minimum ATAR ranking of 75 or equivalent (non-recent school leavers are welcome to apply but must display evidence of academic merit)

  

Application process

Applicants will be required to provide the following as part of the application:

  • A written statement of up to 1700 words in total outlining:
    • A little bit about yourself.
    • Your course and why you have chosen your field of study.
    • Academic achievement: reflected not just in your results but also your participation in academic forums, competitions, merit awards, extra-curricular courses, or achievements gained through special interests programs
    • Community Involvement: demonstrating how committed you are to your community by volunteering in a variety of events, social and environmental causes, sporting or art clubs, and charity programs both within the school and in the broader community
    • Leadership roles and responsibilities you have undertaken: Demonstrated through school committees, sporting membership and leadership, part-time or casual work, hobbies and skills attained.
  • A values statement of up to 500 words in total outlining
    • Identify a core value that helps ground you and guide your actions and decisions through life. Explain what this value means to you.
    • Your vision
      • What are your long-term aspirations?
      • How will your chosen degree help you realise this vision?
      • What short-term goals have you set yourself for the next three years?
    • Your Legacy: Your values, goals and behaviour contribute to the legacy you leave behind. Whether it’s a career or personal aspiration, tell us how you wish to be remembered.
  • Evidence of academic merit (ATAR Statement or Transcript with GPA from your most recent studies)
  • Resume
  • Two letters of recommendation:
    • For Year 12 school leaver applicants - one academic and one community engagement letter of recommendation.
    • For non-school leaver applicants - one professional and one community engagement letter of recommendation.

Selection criteria

Applications are assessed based on the strength of the following criteria:

  • Written statement
  • Values statement
  • Academic merit
  • Leadership and community participation
  • Resume
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Preference will be given to students relocating from regional, rural or remote areas.

 

Selection process

Applicants will be shortlisted by the Scholarships Office, and recipients selected by an advisory committee, including representatives from GAF.

 

Ongoing requirements

To remain eligible for this scholarship, recipients are required to maintain the following each semester for the duration of the scholarship:

  • A minimum grade point average of at least 5.0 (credit)
  • A minimum Pass grade for all units in which they were enrolled in the previous study period
  • A full-time study load at the Ballarat, Blacktown, North Sydney or Strathfield campus


Other

  • Provide an annual report on progress and learning for the George Alexander Foundation. The report is to be submitted no later than 1 October of each year the scholarship is active. 
  • Recipients will also be invited to a presentation event, and networking events with other George Alexander scholars and are requested to attend if this does not impede placement or study commitments.
