About this scholarship

Established in 2016 as a tangible memorial to Jodie Reid, a 1996 ACU Nursing Graduate and Centaur Medalist, who died in 2004, aged 27, after suffering from Diabetes mellitus for 25 years.

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to applicants who meet all of the following criteria, by the scholarship application close date:

  • Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students (Confirmation of Aboriginality will be required)
  • Faculty: Health Sciences
  • Course: enrolled in one of the following courses in Semester 1, 2024:
    • Bachelor of Nursing
    • Bachelor of Midwifery
    • Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine
  • Campus: Brisbane
  • Participation, or intention to participate in a professional or personal activity in a rural or remote-based community (for example, through community engagement or a professional placement).
  • Financial hardship
  • Currently live in, or have relocated from, a regional, rural or remote area of Queensland.

Refer to the Rural, Remote and Metropolitan Area (RRMA) as a guide for area classifications.


Application process

Please provide the following as part of the application:

  • A written statement of approximately 500 words outlining (please refer to the Jodi Michelle Reid booklet and incorporate into your responses where applicable):
    • any hardship or barriers you have faced in accessing higher education, and how your degree will change your future.
    • why you have chosen to undertake your degree, and what you hope to achieve with it in the future.  
    • your engagement (or your intention to engage) with a rural or remote community. 
    • how obtaining your degree will allow you to give back to the community (e.g. working in a rural or remote community).
  • Evidence of your involvement in, or intention to participate in, community engagement or placement in a rural or remote setting.
  • Evidence of financial hardship:
    • Most recent tax assessment notice, OR
    • Centrelink Income Statement, OR
    • Most recent 60 days of bank transactions AND pay slips from the last 6 weeks
  • Letter of recommendation to support points made in the written statement, this can be from any of the following
    • academic
    • community engagement
    • placement
    • professional
  • Evidence of academic merit from your most recent studies (applies to future students only)
    • ATAR or equivalent; or
    • academic transcript (including GPA)
  • If relevant, evidence of your regional, rural or remote Queensland address (eg a letter with your name and address)
  • Upload Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status (for more information on this requirement please visit, COA)

Applications are assessed based on the strength of the following criteria:

  • Financial hardship
  • Letter of recommendation


Selection process

Applicants will be shortlisted by the Scholarships Office in consultation with the First Peoples Directorate and the recipient will be selected by the donor.


Other

Recipients will be requested to submit an Impact Statement for the donor explaining how the scholarship has assisted them. This should be submitted to the ACU Scholarships Office no later than 1 October in the year the scholarship is awarded.
