About this scholarship
Established in 2014 by local North Sydney resident Mary Curran this Scholarship supports ACU nursing students in their second or third year of study who undertake a placement at a local hospital.
Mary was attended by graduate ACU nurses in 2013 while in a coma for months after having a serious heart infection. Mary has a passion for animals, in particular her cats, Cicero who passed in 2022, and Aristotle.
A secondary scholarship was established in 2019 by Mary Curran in memory of her parents, this Scholarship supports ACU nursing students in their second or third year of study.

Eligibility
Applications are open to current ACU students who meet all of the following criteria:
- Citizenship: domestic
- Faculty: Health Sciences
- Course: Bachelor of Nursing
- Campus: North Sydney
- Year level: second or third year of degree (as of Semester 1, 2024)
- Have completed a clinical placement
- Study load: full-time
- Minimum GPA of 5.0 on the ACU seven-point scale
- A deep interest in animals
Application process
Applicants are required to provide the following as part of the application:
- A written statement of approximately 300 words outlining:
- why you have chosen to undertake your degree
- what you hope to achieve through your degree in the future.
- your interest in animals (i.e. do they play a role in healing?)
Selection criteria
Applications are assessed based on the strength of the following criteria:
- Written statement
- Academic merit (based on ACU results)
Selection process
Applicants will be shortlisted by the Scholarships Office, and the recipients will be selected by the donor.
Other
Recipients will be requested to submit an Impact Statement for the donor explaining how the scholarship has assisted them. This should be submitted to the ACU Scholarships Office no later than 1 October in the year the scholarship is awarded.
