About this scholarship
Established in 2000 by St John of God Health Care (Ballarat) to celebrate the contribution of Sister Assumption Neary who, in various roles, has provided health care in the Ballarat community since 1959. This scholarship supports Nursing students in Ballarat who are in need of financial support.

On successfully completing their degree, the recipient will be given the opportunity to complete their graduate year at St John of God Ballarat Hospital. Acceptance into the graduate year at St John of God Ballarat Hospital is contingent on a successful interview outcome.

Eligibility
Applications are open to those who meet all of the following criteria:
- Commencing in Semester 1, 2025
- Faculty: Health Sciences
- Course: Bachelor of Nursing (including double degrees)
- Campus: Ballarat
- Financial need or other disadvantage
Application process
Applicants will be required to provide the following as part of the application:
- A written statement* of approximately 200 words outlining:
- Why you have chosen to undertake this degree.
- The challenges you have overcome, or may face in undertaking your study due to financial circumstances or other disadvantages. Types of disadvantage may include, but are not limited to:
- Financial
- Medical
- Reside 50km or more from the Ballarat campus.
- Provide evidence of the disadvantages as outlined in your written statement. Types of evidence may include, but are not limited to:
- Concession or Health Care Card
- The most recent 60 days of bank transactions AND pay slips from the last 6 weeks
- Letter from a medical professional
- Statutory declaration

Selection process
Applications will be shortlisted by the Scholarships Office and a recipient selected by a panel comprising the donor Mission and Nursing representatives and a representative of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine, Ballarat Campus.
Other
- Recipients will be requested to submit an Impact Statement for the donor explaining how the scholarship has assisted them. The letter should be submitted to the Scholarships Office no later than 1 October in the year that the scholarship is awarded.
- On completion of their Nursing degree, recipients will be invited to attend an interview for the opportunity to complete their graduate year at the St John of God Ballarat Hospital.
