About this scholarship

Established in 2016, based on the foundational principles it is the desire of St John of God Health Care NSW Mental Health Services to support ACU’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students within the Health Faculty through a scholarship. The St John of God Health Care (SJGHC) Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) expresses the desire to work collaboratively and respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the process of Reconciliation. Central to this is the goal of engaging in a manner that provides a range of services and opportunities to foster career opportunities within the mental health care sector.

Value

  • The scholarship is valued at $20,000, to be paid in instalments of $5,000 per semester.
  • There is one scholarship available.
  • Subject to availability, the Scholarship recipient will be offered optional paid work in the first year of the Scholarship, consisting of a minimum two shifts per fortnight during the University term or as per hospital requirements at one of the two SJGHC Mental Health facilities. SJGHC will be supportive of the preference/location of the recipient where possible.

Eligibility

Applications are open to applicants who meet all of the following criteria:

  • Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students (Confirmation of Aboriginality will be required)
  • Faculty: Health Sciences
  • Course: enrolled in one of the following
    • Bachelor of Nursing
    • Bachelor of Nursing/Paramedicine
    • Bachelor of Social Work
    • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy
    • Masters of Psychology (Clinical)
  • Campus: North Sydney, Strathfield or Blacktown
  • Year level as of Semester 1, 2024: 
    • 2nd year of a three-year course or
    • 3rd year of a four-year course or
    • completed at least semester of a Masters degree
  • Required study load: full time

 

Application process

Applicants are required to provide the following as part of the application:

  • A written statement of approximately 400 words outlining:
    • why you have chosen to undertake your degree.
    • what you hope to achieve with it in the future, with a focus on mental health.
    • how obtaining your degree will allow you to give back to your community.
  • Upload Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status (for more information on this requirement please visit, COA)

Selection criteria

Applications are assessed based on the strength of the following criteria:

  • Written statement
  • Academic merit (based on current ACU GPA)
  • Interview (if shortlisted)

 

Selection process

The applications will be shortlisted by the Scholarships Office. Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview with a selection committee, comprising of one representative each from the Faculty of Health Sciences, First Peoples Directorate and St John of God Health Care NSW.

Preference will be given to those who are willing and able to undertake the placement.


Ongoing requirements

To remain eligible for this scholarship, recipients are required to maintain the following each semester for the duration of the scholarship:

  • A minimum Pass grade for all units in which they were enrolled in the previous study period
  • A full-time study load at one of the New South Wales campuses
  • Enrolment in the same course under which the scholarship is awarded
     
     

Other

  • Recipients will be requested to submit an Impact Statement for the donor explaining how the scholarship has assisted them. This should be submitted to the ACU Scholarships Office no later than 1 October each year.
  • Recipients will be invited to a presentation event and are requested to attend if this does not impede placement or study commitments.
