About this scholarship

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne has been providing compassionate health care for more than 75 years. This Scholarship was established in 2010 to create opportunities for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students studying at the Melbourne or Ballarat campus to pursue studies in nursing. Recipients are given the opportunity to complete their graduate year at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne.

Value

  • This scholarship is valued at up to $15,000, to be paid in instalments of $2,500 per semester for the duration of a three-year course and $1,875 for the duration of a four-year course. A pro-rata (partial) payment is calculated for part-time enrolment.
  •  The recipient will also have the opportunity to complete their graduate year at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne.
  • There is one scholarship available.

Eligibility

This scholarship is open to applicants who meet all of the following criteria by the application close date:

  • Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students (Confirmation of Aboriginality will be required)
  • Faculty: Health Sciences
  • Course: Semester 1, 2025 enrolment in one of the following: 
    • Bachelor of Nursing
    • Bachelor of Midwifery
    • Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine
  • Campus: Melbourne or Ballarat


Application process

Applicants will be required to provide the following as part of the application:

  • A written statement* of approximately 200 words outlining:
    • your commitment to the nursing and/or midwifery and/or paramedic profession and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander healthcare overall;
    • your leadership experience, community and family service activities;
    • your personal career aspirations; and
    • how the scholarship could financially support your program of study
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Evidence of academic merit (applies to future students only) 
    • ATAR or equivalent; or
    • academic transcript with GPA
  • Upload Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status (for more information on this requirement please visit, COA)

  • Interview (shortlisted applicants only)


Selection process

  • Applicants will be shortlisted by the Scholarships Office in consultation with the First Peoples and Equity Pathways Directorate.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be Invited to attend an interview with a committee comprising of; a representative of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine - VIC, the Coordinator of Jim-Baa-yer. Indigenous Unit and Mission Integration Manager and Education Manager, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne (or nominee).


Ongoing requirements

To remain eligible for this scholarship, recipients are required to maintain the following each semester for the duration of the scholarship:

  • A minimum pass grade for all units attempted
  • Continued enrolment in either the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery or Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine
  • Enrolment at the Melbourne or Ballarat campus


Other

  • An interview with the selected recipient will be necessary before acceptance into the graduate year at St Vincent’s Private Hospital.
  • Recipients will be requested to submit an Impact Statement for the donor explaining how the scholarship has assisted them. The letter should be submitted to the Scholarships Office no later than 1 October in the year the scholarship is awarded.
  • Recipients will be invited to a presentation event and are requested to attend if this does not impede placement or study commitments.
